How to move crypto across chains to repay a loan

Moving funds to the chain where a loan is due can buy time, but bridge delays, swaps, fees and gas all affect whether repayment lands in time.

How to move crypto across chains to repay a loan

If your loan is on one blockchain and your repayment funds are on another, you must get the right token onto the loan’s chain and repay it before your position can be liquidated. A bridge moves tokens between chains; it does not repay the loan for you. The key is to allow time for the transfer, then confirm the repayment on the lending app.

For a small transfer, compare the bridge’s quoted cost and arrival time with the cost of sending funds from an exchange that supports withdrawals on the destination chain. This Super Bridge fee comparison for small transfers looks at that trade-off in more detail. Either route can cost more than expected once network fees and any token swap are included.

What should I check before bridging funds?

First, check the loan app’s position page and find the debt token, network and amount owed. Then check your position’s liquidation measure. Aave calls its measure the health factor: its V3 documentation says a position can be liquidated when that figure falls below 1. Other lending protocols use different measures and rules, so check the app for your loan.

Next, confirm that the bridge supports the token on both the source and destination chains. The same token name can refer to different assets on different chains. Make sure the destination token is the one the lending app accepts for repayment, or plan for a swap after it arrives.

  • Check the destination network and wallet address.
  • Compare the amount you will receive after fees with the amount needed to repay.
  • Keep the destination chain’s native token for gas, the fee paid to submit transactions.
  • Leave room for the debt to grow with interest and for prices to move while the transfer is pending.

How do I repay after the transfer arrives?

Wait until the funds show in your wallet on the destination chain. If they arrived as a different token, swap only the amount needed into the accepted debt token, while keeping enough for gas. Open the lending app on the correct chain, choose repay, and check the token and amount before signing. Some apps need permission to use a token before repayment; read each wallet prompt and approve only what the app requires.

After the transaction confirms, return to the position page and check that the debt fell and the liquidation measure improved. A submitted transaction is not proof that the loan was repaid. If the balance did not change, check the transaction status and whether you used the right market and token.

Which route is better when time is short?

Use the route that can deliver the correct token to the correct chain in time, based on its live quote and your own checks. A bridge may be convenient if your funds are already in a wallet, while an exchange withdrawal may suit funds already held there. Neither route guarantees arrival before liquidation. A fast bridge can also cost more, and a cheap route can take too long if its transfer needs extra steps.

Do not wait until the position is at the liquidation threshold to start moving funds. Bridge time, network congestion and price changes can turn a planned repayment into a late one. The practical rule is simple: check the loan first, send only what you need plus fees, and verify the repayment on the lending app.
